The Kings of Mysore were known for their religious sensibilities and provided opportunities for co-existence of people of various communities and the motto of communal harmony was well established. St. Philomena's Church is a standing example of even the minority population being given adequate opportunities to follow their beliefs and individualities.
St. Philomena's Church is the tallest church in Mysore, built in the honour of the Saint, Philomena. The architecture of the church is inspired by the Cologne Cathedral of Germany. Before this, a church existed at this very location, and was built by the earlier King, in about 1843. The St Philomena's church was later built on this double foundation. During the laying of the foundation stone, the King made a speech quoting the double foundations as divine compassion and the eager gratitude of men.
The church is about 175 ft high and can be spotted from miles making it a distinctive landmark in the city. The floor plan of this cathedral is in the form of a cross. The beautiful glass stained windows depicting scenes of the story of Jesus, the ornate exteriors make it a delight to watch. The church can seat up to about 800 people and is one of largest churches here.
The church is a standing symbol of the secular nature of the Kings here. It is also a symbol of the philanthropic work that has gone on in the name of St. Philomena, in the form of schools, colleges, orphanages, etc.
